For today's Take, I'm going to take us away from the stormy East Coast and focus on a West Coast matchup, with the Los Angeles Angels visiting the Oakland Athletics. When diving into the data, I identified some great value props staring me right in the face - in the form of the reigning AL MVP Shohei Ohtani. Let's take a look.
Tonight, Ohtani and the Angels will face the A's left hander Cole Irvin, who enters the game with a 9-13 record on the season, along with a 1.18 WHIP.
While these numbers are respectable, a deeper dive into the career head-to-head matchup vs. Ohtani illustrates the potential reward certainly outweighing the risk on the Ohtani props tonight.
In his career against Irvin, Ohtani is 8 for 25 (.320 batting average) with 5 of his 8 hits going for extra bases - including 3 doubles and 2 home runs. Clearly, Ohtani sees the lefty well, and has put some good swings on the mistakes that Irvin has left over the plate.
In addition, Shohei has been swinging a very hot bat - closing out September with a .313 average, compiling 51 total bases, 13 runs scored and 12 RBI.
Okay - now the crazy part - Ohtani has not hit a home run since September 11th, and only hit 4 home runs the entire month of September.
With only a few remaining at bats this season, I expect him to get his moneys worth and am comfortable taking the risk at almost 5/1 odds, so bet Shohei Ohtani to have a big night over at BetMGM.
