Cubs vs. Phillies Best Bets

Friday July 22, 2022 7:05PM (ET)

PICK: Phillies ML (-130)

The Phillies open the second half of the year with a three-game series with the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. It goes without saying that this is a good match-up for Philadelphia, and that means it’s a good opportunity to claim a free $200 from BetMGM while you're at it.

The Phillies currently hold the final wild-card spot in the National League, with a half-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. Kyle Gibson toes the rubber for Philadelphia in Game 1, and he is 5-3 on the season with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

Gibson’s last two starts before the break were superb, as he gave up only one earned run in 13 innings over those two outings. Gibson is also 4-1 at home this season, with a 4.01 ERA but a manageable 1.08 WHIP.

The Phillies happen to be 27-14 under interim manager Rob Thomson and the biggest effect has been seen in their bullpen. Philadelphia’s 'pen was one of the worst in the majors under Joe Girardi, but the team has a bullpen ERA of 3.29 under Thomson, which is the sixth-best mark in the majors. And over the last 15 days, their bullpen ERA is an even better 2.72.

The Cubs will counter with lefty Justin Steele, who is just 3-6 on the season with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. He has struggled mightily on the road, where he is 0-2 with an ERA of 5.86 and a 1.52 WHIP. Behind Steele is a Chicago bullpen that has an ERA of 4.00 over the last 15 days.

I typically don't like to lay this much juice, but I'm rolling with the Phillies to win this game and you might as well claim a free $200 in bonuses from BetMGM ➡️ here ⬅️ if you're with me.
