After struggling to score runs following the big trade deadline additions, the Padres offense came to life in their series against the San Francisco Giants. The Padres scored 20 runs in the final two games of that series and should be ready to go tonight after an off day yesterday.
San Diego will face youngster Cory Abbott in this contest, and he's extremely beatable at this point. The Nationals right hander is coming off a road start against the Philadelphia Phillies on August 7th in which he allowed seven earned runs in 3.2 innings. Abbott only has 30 career innings under his big-league belt and has a 6.30 ERA with a 1.67 WHIP in those innings.
Behind Abbott is a Nationals bullpen that has a 5.86 ERA over the last 30 days, which is second-highest in the majors. Overall on the season, the Nationals bullpen has the seventh-highest ERA in baseball at 4.34.
Soto has hit his total bases mark in each of the last two games and he has an ISO of .286 against right-handed pitching this year. Lefties have four home runs and one double in 30 at-bats against Abbott this season. With all that said, I am expecting San Diego's offense, along with Soto, to handle this pitching staff all weekend long.
