The Columbus Blue Jackets return home from the Global Series games in Finland tonight to host the Philadelphia Flyers.The Jackets lost both of those games to the Colorado Avalanche by a combined score of 11-4.
Expectations were high for this team after signing Johnny Gaudrau in the off-season but it's been a tough start for Columbus as they are 3-9 on the year.Johnny Hockey has 9 points in 12 games but his presence had not made the expected impact as of yet on this offense.
Their goaltending has also been atrocious as they have a team Save Percentage of .871. Elvis Merzlikins is the likely starter tonight, who is 2-5 on the season, with a 4.81 GAA and a .863 Save%. Columbus is also allowing a league high 4.58 goals per game.
The Philadelphia Flyers have been the total opposite this season. Under new coach John Tortorella, who formerly coached in Columbus, they have gotten off to a 7-3-2 start. Philly has relied on their goaltending, in particular Carter Hart, who is 6-0-2 on the season with a 1.97 GAA and a .946 Save%.
Hart missed the last game with an illness but is likely to start tonight in net. Forward Travis Konecny is having a resurgence under the new staff.
TK leads the team with 5 goals and 14 points in 12 games this season. We saw the effect of these global series games earlier in the season as both the Sharks and Predators struggled when returning from North America. I think the Flyers hold a ton of value tonight as Torts has them playing a tough style of Hockey.
I am also looking at a Player Prop in Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov to hit his shot on goal mark. Provorov, who is another player having a resurgence under Tortorella, has been more active in the offense end this season.
Ivan has hit his SOG mark 6 of 12 games this season, including each of the last 2. He draws a fantastic matchup tonight as the Blue Jackets are allowing 12.1 shots per game to defenseman, which is the most in the league.
