We begin Day 1 of our daily picks column in St. Louis where the Cardinals look primed to beat up on a Pirates team that hasn't improved all that much on paper since their dismal 61-101 season in 2021. The man mountain, 6'7" Adam Wainwright, will be on the mound for the Cards, and after yet another outstanding year last year, he should be able to contain the Pirates early. This is a classic get-right-early match for St. Louis.

Mets vs. Nationals, 7:05PM ET

Surprise surprise, there has been some preseason hype among locals in New York for a sports team in the city - this time it's the Mets. After some exciting offseason pick ups, such as Max Scherzer, they find themselves 8th in World Series betting at +1500. But will they get their season off to a winning start? Instead of Scherzer or de Grom, it will be Tylor Megill starting first for New York. Megill was no slouch in his rookie year in 2021 for the Mets, registering a 4.52 ERA from 18 starts. Astros vs. Angels, 9:38PM ET

We don't have to wait very long at all to get the full Shohei Ohtani experience with the reigning AL MVP taking to the mound tonight in Anaheim against an Astros team who are still licking their wounds after a World Series defeat to the Braves back in November. Ohtani was dominant on the mound last year with a 9-2 winning record as a starter, but he has historically struggled against the Astros, losing both career pitching starts against them while giving up 15 runs. With the firepower at the disposal of both teams, plus the extremely hot LA weather, the over looks like the best bet to take.
