Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey wants to temporarily suspend the state`s gas tax, but Kalshi traders currently see little chance of the proposal taking effect before Election Day.
Healey filed legislation on September 23 that would pause Massachusett`s 24-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline and diesel for two months. The measure is part of a wider $2.24 billion fiscal 2026 closeout supplemental budget.
Despite the governor`s support, the latest Kalshi market indicates traders are skeptical that lawmakers will get the suspension over the line.
Kalshi`s market asks whether Massachusetts will suspend its gas tax before November 3, 2026. The latest prices put “Yes” at around 5% and “No” at 95%, giving the suspension only a slim implied chance of happening before the market deadline.
On prediction market sites like Kalshi, contract prices fluctuate as traders respond to political developments. A “Yes” contract trading around 5 cents broadly represents a 5% probability of the market believing it will occur, white the winning side ultimately pays $1 per contract under the market`s settlement terms.

Healey`s plan would suspend the state tax for two months, taking effect seven days after the legislation is signed. Massachusetts currently charges 24 cents per gallon on gasoline and diesel.
The proposal would require gas stations to lower prices to reflect the suspended tax, with the administration arguing that this would ensure that the savings reach drivers.
When announcing the proposal, Healey`s office said regular gasoline averaged around $4.41 per gallon compared with $2.90 in February. Diesel had climbed from $4.20 to roughly $6.40 over the same period.
The governor has presented the temporary tax holiday as a response to higher fuel costs associated with disruption from the Iran war.
The biggest obstacle to the suspension is the Massachusetts Legislature. House Speaker Ron Mariano criticized suspending the gas tax as “fiscally irresponsible” before Healey formally filed her proposal.
House Ways and Means Chairman Aaron Michelewitz was also noncommittal on October 1, saying lawmakers were reviewing the provision while pointing to previous House votes against similar proposals.
More recent reporting indicates that the proposal has continued to struggle for support among Democratic legislative leaders. There is some political support, though, as the Boston City Council adopted a resolution backing the two-month suspension and urged state lawmakers to pass it as soon as possible.
For Kalshi traders, however, the question is not whether the proposal has supporters, since the contract specifically requires Massachusetts to suspend its gas tax before November 3rd.
With that deadline fast approaching and influential lawmakers showing little enthusiasm, the market currently sees No as the overwhelming favorite. Any signs that legislative leaders are prepared to advance Healey`s proposal could move the price quickly, making Beacon hill the key place for Kalshi traders to watch.
