Men's college basketball news and analysis

Michigan enters the 2026-27 season as the reigning national champion after beating UConn 69-63 in Indianapolis for the program's first title since 1989. The Wolverines defend it under Mike Boynton Jr., promoted after Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks, and without lottery picks Morez Johnson Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg, and Aday Mara. Final Four Most Outstanding Player Elliot Cadeau is back to run the offense.

Florida and Duke start the season with the strongest rosters on paper. The Gators bring back Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu from their 2025 title team, and Duke adds Wisconsin transfer John Blackwell to a program that has won 70 games over the last two seasons. Illinois returns five of its top eight scorers from last season's Final Four team. UConn has played in three of the last four title games and gets a rematch with Michigan on Nov. 6, and Michigan State has Jeremy Fears Jr. back for Tom Izzo.

The season runs on the usual calendar: opening night on Nov. 2, nonconference games and early-season tournaments through November and December, conference play across the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, ACC, and Big East, then championship week and March Madness.

The 2027 NCAA tournament is the first with 76 teams, adding 12 Opening Round games before the 64-team bracket. Selection Sunday is March 14, and the Final Four is at Ford Field in Detroit, with the national championship on April 5.

For bettors, the college game moves in ways the NBA doesn't.

Dimers covers all of it across NCAA Division I men's basketball, from opening night to the national championship in Detroit. Check back through the season for game previews, player props, injury and lineup news, transfer and coaching moves, conference tournament coverage, and the betting angles that come with them.

Men's college basketball betting glossary

These are the terms you'll see most often in our previews and picks.

  • Spread: The number of points a favorite has to win by, or an underdog has to stay within, to cover. Nonconference spreads can run past 20 points when a power program hosts a mid-major.
  • Moneyline: A bet on which team wins outright. The odds reflect each team's chance of winning, so a heavy favorite pays far less than an underdog.
  • Over/Under (Total): A bet on whether the two teams combine for more or fewer points than the number the sportsbook sets.
  • Prop bets: Bets on a player or team stat instead of the result, such as a player's points, rebounds, or made 3-pointers.
  • Futures: Bets settled later in the season, such as the national champion, a conference title, or national player of the year.
  • Parlay: Two or more bets combined into one. Every leg has to win, and the payout grows with each leg you add.
  • Teaser: A parlay that moves the spread or total in your favor on each leg, in exchange for a smaller payout.
  • Live betting: Betting after tip-off, with odds that move as the game goes on.
  • Bankroll management: Setting aside a fixed amount for betting and sizing each bet as a small share of it.
  • Vig (Vigorish): The sportsbook's fee for taking a bet, built into the odds. At standard -110 odds, you need to win 52.4% of your bets to break even.
  • Push: A result that lands exactly on the spread or total. The bet is refunded.

Responsible gambling

College basketball has games almost every night from November to March, and a Saturday slate can run from noon to midnight, which makes it easy to bet more than you planned. Set a limit before the first tip and stay within it. No preview, projection, or pick can guarantee a result, so only bet what you can afford to lose, and treat a losing night as money spent rather than something to chase on the next game.

If gambling is causing harm for you or someone close to you, our responsible gambling resources have support services and self-exclusion options.
