Bill Belichick on the hot seat for UNC? Why the data says redemption season won't begin vs. TCU in Dublin

As college football betting returns and the season storylines take shape, one of the biggest headlines is whether Bill Belichick can turn things around in Year 2. Belichick's first season at North Carolina saw him guide the team to a 4-8 record and just a pair of conference wins, a heralded debut that never recovered from how it started.

Belichick and UNC will open 2026 against the same opponent that blew them out to open last season, this time over in Dublin on Saturday, August 29, and while Dimers' UNC-TCU prediction shows a more competitive matchup, a number of datapoints signal the start of the redemption arc waiting for at least another week.

How Bill Belichick will respond in Year 2 with UNC

The offseason has been anything but quiet for Belichick and UNC. General manager Michael Lombardi is on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation, and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has been on medical leave.

Belichick responded to last season's on-field product by tearing the roster down and rebuilding it from the bottom up. UNC now features 40 true freshmen alongside a core of returning players, a sharp contrast to the hastily assembled group that took the field a year ago.

The offense is the center of the rebuild after finishing last in the ACC in total offense in 2025, with a new coordinator in Bobby Petrino and a new starting quarterback in Billy Edwards Jr., a graduate transfer who played at Maryland and Wisconsin before winning the starting gig in late August.

Despite the overhaul, the Dimers model isn't seeing much in the way of long-term upside in our college football futures, giving UNC just a 0.4% chance to win the ACC, meaning nothing short of a wildly successful season will get them into meaningful January football.

Our ACC conference futures predictions.That probability puts UNC in the bottom four teams in the conference, meaning this season will be less about competing for any hardware and primarily about showing a meaningful improvement over last year, and answering whether or not Belichick is the solution for the program.

What the data says about UNC vs. TCU

The Tar Heels opened 2025 at home against TCU and were run off their own field, 48-14, with the Horned Frogs forcing numerous UNC turnovers. The losses piled up from there, particularly against conference opponents.

Dimers' model isn't projecting a repeat of last year's blowout, but it isn't projecting a particularly competitive game either, giving TCU a 75% win probability against North Carolina. At 25% for UNC, fair odds would be +300 for an upset, but they are currently priced at +290 at best.

On the spread, the market has TCU favored by 7.5, and Dimers' strongest lean on the board agrees, with TCU -7.5 covering at a 53.0% probability, priced just around fair odds (-113) at -115 on BetMGM. It's not an edge, but it's the model's clearest read on how this game script plays out and doesn't carry any substantial negative value.

That game script shows up clearly in Dimers' college football player props as well. Featuring the data form our brand-new college football player props model,  only running back Benjamin June is projected to clear his line for UNC, and it's a low one at just 31.5 rushing yards.

On the TCU side, it's the complete opposite: WRs Jordan Dwyer and Ed Small are both projected to go over their receiving marks, RB Jeremy Payne is projected to narrowly clear his rushing total, and two Horned Frogs carry an edge to score a touchdown, led by WR Terry Shelton at a 30.3% probability and +390 odds, fair at +230.TCU WR Terry Shelton gets an edge to score this week.

Put together, the data paints a clear picture, unfortunately at the expense of Belichick's redemption arc, with the best betting value found in backing offensive upside by TCU at a player prop level.
