USC kicks off its season as big favorites against San Jose State and the Dimers model has found a number of touchdown edges in the game.

USC, college football prediction, Tanook Hines
USC WR Tanook Hines could be in line for a big game if he starts vs. San Jose State.

USC opens its season as a runaway favorite and the Dimers model is pointing to a big offensive outing to kick off the year.

The Trojans are laying 38.5 points at home against San Jose State on Saturday, August 29, with a total of 61.5 and moneyline odds so lopsided (-10000 USC, +3000 San Jose State) that Dimers' model gives the Spartans just a 2% chance to win in our USC vs. San Jose State prediction.

A 50-point offensive projection against an overmatched Mountain West defense means there's a lot of college football player prop value to be found in a game where touchdowns should be plentiful.

All the Dimers data paints a picture that returning sophomore WR Tanook Hines becomes the story of this opener, if he avoids an injury designation at gametime.

The data case for Tanook Hines

USC's receiver room looks vastly different from a year ago.

Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane, the top two options in that passing game, are both off to the NFL. Hines is the only meaningful starting WR left standing, and that reshapes what USC's passing attack is supposed to look like in 2026; no longer a complementary piece as he'll aim to gain rapport with QB Jayden Maiava.

As a true freshman in 2025, Hines caught 34 passes for 561 yards and two touchdowns across 13 games, flashing the kind of ceiling that a No. 1 wideout is capable of with a pair of big games late in the year, six catches for 141 yards  and a TD at Oregon, and six for 163 yards in the Alamo Bowl.

Behind a 50-point team total projection for USC, those touchdowns have to come from somewhere and the opportunity and prediction data all aligns for Hines this afternoon.

The game-time decision

The big factor in today's game vs. San Jos State is health.

Hines underwent an undisclosed procedure in the spring and was largely held out of fall camp while he recovered, which has left his status for the opener genuinely uncertain into game week.

USC head coach Lincoln Riley has described him as "close" to a full return after an uptick in his workload over the last two weeks and a full participation in the team's mock game. As of the latest reports at time of publishing, he's officially a game-time decision against San Jose State.

That mix of undeniable talent, an expanded role by default, and lingering injury uncertainty is exactly the kind of setup Dimers' model tends to find value in, and it shows up across all three of Hines' touchdown markets today, each bet identified by our brand-new college football player props model.

cfb propsOur three edges on Tanook Hines as seen in the Dimers App.

At 52.7%, Hines should carry minus odds shorter than +100, yet we get value in the opposite direction, the number one flag on Hines today.

Hines is also flagged with a "Tuddy Threat" signal on the anytime market, Dimers' signal for a player clearing a 50% probability to score along with a betting edge, and Hines is the only such player on the board.

If Hines plays anywhere close to a full workload, he's live for the anytime score, with a multi-score afternoon, and live to be the first man to the end zone.

Where's the value if Hines doesn't play?

If Hines is held out, our model finds value in the contingency plan.

Corey Simms, a former four-star recruit and special teams player for the Trojans, would likely step into the starting role. His production was limited to special teams and a single six-yard catch as a rookie last season, but Dimers' model has also identified an edge on Simms today, a sign the model likes what an expanded workload against this particular defense could mean for him.

Even if Hines suits up, our model finds value on Simms independent of the injury situation, and with a 50-point projection for USC as a team, it's not unreasonable to see both finding the end zone today.
