FanDuel is preparing to appoint interim CEO Christian Genetski as its permanent leader, choosing an experienced insider as the sports betting industry faces mounting competition and regulatory scrutiny.

According to exclusive reporting by Ben Horney at Front Office Sports, Genetski will officially assume the position on January 1, 2027, following several months as interim CEO.

Flutter Entertainment CEO Dan Taylor communicated the decision to employees in an internal email, which FOS obtained.

"Christian has done a fantastic job leading FanDuel on an interim basis," Taylor wrote, praising his experience and understanding of the business.

The appointment provides continuity following the departure of former CEO Amy Howe in May, but Genetski inherits a company facing challenges that extend well beyond its traditional sportsbook competitors.

From the rapid growth of prediction markets to increased scrutiny of customer protections, FanDuel's next chapter could look considerably different from its last.

Who is Christian Genetski?

Genetski has spent nearly 12 years at FanDuel, holding senior positions including chief legal officer and chief commercial officer.

He became interim CEO in May after Howe's departure and has overseen the business through a period of significant industry change.

His appointment also follows a leadership transition at parent company Flutter Entertainment, where Dan Taylor replaced Peter Jackson as CEO on October 1.

In the internal announcement reported by FOS, Taylor emphasized the value of retaining someone familiar with FanDuel's operations and growth.

Genetski previously highlighted the company's performance during major sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup and NBA Finals, as evidence of its ability to attract and engage customers.

FanDuel has not publicly confirmed the permanent appointment, and a company representative declined to comment to FOS.

Prediction markets present a new challenge

One of the biggest issues facing FanDuel is the emergence of prediction markets as an alternative way for Americans to put money on sporting outcomes.

Platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket have attracted significant attention by offering event contracts through a federally regulated framework, rather than traditional state sportsbook licenses.

For established operators, that creates both a competitive threat and a potential opportunity.

FanDuel responded by launching its own prediction market offering, FanDuel Predicts, late last year.

But operating across different regulatory frameworks introduces complications.

Last week, FanDuel stopped allowing Utah customers to trade sports, political, and novelty event contracts through FanDuel Predicts after the state filed felony criminal charges against Kalshi.

The move illustrates the uncertainty facing operators attempting to participate in prediction markets while maintaining their established sportsbook businesses.

For Genetski, the challenge will be balancing innovation and expansion with the regulatory requirements and commercial relationships that underpin FanDuel's existing operations.

His background in both legal and commercial leadership could prove particularly relevant.

Investor pressure adds to the challenge

FanDuel's leadership change also comes amid significant pressure on publicly traded sports betting companies.

According to FOS, Flutter shares had fallen almost 60% since the beginning of 2026 as of November 2, despite recovering more than 16% over the preceding month.

DraftKings shares had also declined more than 36% year-to-date.

Those figures reflect a difficult period for investors in the sector, although share price movements alone don't establish the underlying performance of either sportsbook.

Prediction markets, changing competitive dynamics, and questions about future profitability have added complexity to the sports betting industry, which has spent years expanding across regulated US states.

For FanDuel, maintaining its position in traditional sports betting while developing new products will be an important part of the incoming CEO's responsibilities.

VIP betting programs face growing scrutiny

Genetski will also inherit ongoing questions about FanDuel's treatment of high-value customers.

The company has faced criticism from lawmakers over its VIP bettor program, including concerns about incentives and the relationships between sportsbook representatives and frequent gamblers.

That scrutiny intensified after a video surfaced showing Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper sending a Thanksgiving greeting to a FanDuel VIP customer in 2024.

Harper did not encourage additional gambling in the video, but its publication prompted broader questions about how sportsbooks engage with valuable customers.

The recipient, Terry Thompson, subsequently filed a lawsuit against FanDuel and DraftKings, alleging that their platforms deliberately encouraged addictive behavior.

Those allegations remain claims made in litigation, rather than established findings.

For bettors, the underlying questions concern transparency, responsible gaming protections, and whether VIP programs appropriately balance commercial incentives with customer welfare.

As the industry matures, these issues are likely to remain important regardless of who leads its biggest operators.

What FanDuel's leadership change means for bettors

Genetski's appointment doesn't immediately change the products or services available to FanDuel customers.

But the decisions made under his leadership could shape how the company responds to prediction markets, regulatory developments, and changing expectations around consumer protection.

The central challenge is balancing growth with trust.

Sportsbooks are competing not only on odds, promotions, and product features but increasingly on how they protect customers and operate within a fragmented regulatory environment.

FanDuel's decision to promote an experienced insider suggests a preference for continuity rather than a major leadership reset.

Whether that approach succeeds will depend on how effectively the company navigates an industry where the rules, competitors, and expectations are continuing to evolve.

For Genetski, the task isn't simply maintaining FanDuel's position in sports betting. It's preparing the company for what comes next.
