All 75 Week 1 Saturday games ranked by win probability, from a 55.5-point Virginia Tech blowout to two true coin flips separating Big Ten rivals.

Ranking College Football Week 1 games and James Franklin's debut as Virginia Tech head coach.
New Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin will oversee what the data says is the most lopsided matchup in College Football Week 1 .

Week 1 of the 2026 college football season technically opened with a Thursday (and Friday) appetizer, but Saturday, September 5, is the real thing, the first full Saturday of the year, anchored by the return of FOX's Big Noon Kickoff, live from Bloomington in honor of national champion Indiana. 75 games kick off before midnight, and they range from "the outcome was decided the moment the schedule was released" to "flip a coin and you'd have as good a read as the sportsbooks do."

Below, every College Football prediction on the Saturday slate is ranked using the market's own numbers, the higher team's win probability and, where a line exists, the point spread. The list runs from the most lopsided mismatch of the day down to the two coin-flip games nobody can call.

Lines and probabilities move between now and kickoff, so treat the exact percentages as a snapshot rather than gospel. Percentages listed are for the favored side in each game.

Tier 1: Total wipeouts (98% and up)

This is Week 1 College Football at its most extreme. 25 games where the betting market sees almost no realistic path to an upset, several with spreads north of 40 points.

  1. VMI at Virginia Tech: 100.0%, Virginia Tech -55.5. The biggest number on the board, and it doubles as James Franklin's Hokies debut. Virginia Tech hired Franklin in November after Penn State fired him in October; he inherits a program looking for its first big season in years, and the schedule-makers handed him the softest possible landing spot.
  2. Ball State at Ohio State: 100.0%, Ohio State -50.5. Ohio State was the No. 2 overall seed in last season's expanded playoff field, and Ball State drew the short straw for the opener.
  3. Utah Tech at BYU: 99.9%, BYU -51.5.
  4. Tennessee State at Georgia: 99.9%, Georgia -47.5. Georgia enters as a returning playoff team, seeded No. 3 a year ago.
  5. Morgan State at Arizona State: 99.9%, Arizona State -44.5.
  6. Hampton at Maryland: 99.8%, Maryland -45.5.
  7. Northwestern State at Louisiana Tech: 99.8%, Louisiana Tech -44.5.

  11. Butler at Montana State: 99.6%, no line posted.
  12. Furman at Tennessee: 99.4%, Tennessee -46.5.
  13. Abilene Christian at Texas Tech: 99.4%, Texas Tech -43.5. The Red Raiders were last season's No. 4 playoff seed.
  14. Fordham at North Dakota State: 99.4%, North Dakota State -41.5.
  15. North Texas at Indiana: 99.4%, Indiana -40.5. The Hoosiers open their title defense: Indiana beat Miami 27-21 in January to win the first national championship in program history, capping an unbeaten run.
  16. Missouri State at Texas A&M: 99.4%, Texas A&M -40.5. The Aggies were a No. 7 seed in last year's playoff.

Tier 2: Big, not historic (92% to 97.5%)

Still comfortable, but spreads settle from 24 points up to 32 instead of the 40s and 50s.

  1. Southeast Missouri State at Iowa State: 97.5%, Iowa State -29.5. First game for Jimmy Rogers, hired away from Washington State after Matt Campbell left the Cyclones for Penn State.

  13. Florida Atlantic at Florida: 94.1%, Florida -26.5.
  14. Villanova at Bucknell: 94.0%, no line posted.
  15. Houston Christian at Rice: 93.8%, Rice -22.5.

Tier 3: Should win comfortably (85% to 92.8%)

The favorites here are still heavy, but a couple of these carry real conference-opener stakes.

  1. Citadel at Charlotte: 92.8%, Charlotte -19.5.
  2. Oregon State at Houston: 92.7%, Houston -21.0.
  3. Lamar at Louisiana-Lafayette: 91.8%, Louisiana-Lafayette -20.5.
  4. Alcorn State at Southern Miss: 91.0%, Southern Miss -20.5.
  5. Coastal Carolina at West Virginia: 90.7%, West Virginia -21.0.
  6. Eastern Kentucky at Jacksonville State: 90.6%, Jacksonville State -20.5.
  7. Youngstown State at Kentucky: 90.4%, Kentucky -21.5.

  12. Presbyterian at Mercer: 88.8%, no line posted.

Tier 4: Favored, but not a gimme (77% to 85%)

This is where "should win" starts to feel less automatic: double-digit favorites who could plausibly have a nervy second half.

  1. Sam Houston State at Troy: 85.3%, Troy -16.5.
  2. Richmond at Howard: 84.8%, no line posted.
  3. Miami (OH) at Pittsburgh: 84.1%, Pittsburgh -16.5.
  4. Rhode Island at Temple: 79.8%, Temple -14.5.
  5. Southeastern Louisiana at South Alabama: 79.4%, South Alabama -13.5.
  6. Oklahoma State at Tulsa: 78.1%, Oklahoma State -14.5.
  7. Florida International at South Florida: 77.3%, South Florida -15.0.

Tier 5: The real contests begin (63% to 76%)

Now we're into matchups that could actually swing on a bad snap or a missed field goal, including two teams that reached last year's playoff.

  1. South Dakota State at Northwestern: 75.6%, Northwestern -13.0.
  2. Idaho State at Utah State: 75.3%, Utah State -13.5.
  3. Central Michigan at New Mexico: 75.2%, New Mexico -11.5.
  4. Arkansas State at Memphis: 72.5%, Memphis -11.5.
  5. Clemson at LSU: 68.4%, LSU -10.5. Lane Kiffin's first game as LSU's head coach, after the Tigers fired Brian Kelly in late October following a loss to Texas A&M.
  6. Tulane at Duke: 68.2%, Duke -9.5. Tulane was last season's No. 11 playoff seed.
  7. Boston College at Cincinnati: 63.9%, Cincinnati -7.5.
  8. Liberty at James Madison: 63.3%, James Madison -6.0. JMU enters as a returning playoff team, the Sun Belt champion and a No. 12 seed a year ago.

Tier 6: Coin-flip city (41% to 63%)

The eight closest games of the day, capped by two matchups so tight that the spread and the win-probability model actually disagree about which side is favored.

  1. Holy Cross at Colgate: 63.0%, no line posted.
  2. Baylor at Auburn: 59.8%, Auburn -7.0.
  3. UNLV at Hawaii: 58.8%, UNLV -3.0.
  4. Wyoming at Colorado State: 57.3%, Colorado State -3.0.
  5. Tarleton State at Bowling Green: 57.3%, Bowling Green -2.5.
  6. Gardner-Webb at Wofford: 56.4%, no line posted.
  7. Western Kentucky at Nevada: 53.4% for Nevada, 46.6% for Western Kentucky. The posted line, however, actually favors Western Kentucky, -2.5. Worth watching closely: the number and the model aren't quite in agreement.
  8. UCLA at California: 53.4% for UCLA, 46.6% for California, with the line similarly favoring California, -1.0. The closest disagreement on the board closes out the night, fittingly, as two Big Ten rivals in name only settle it in prime time.

That's 25 games decided in theory before kickoff, eight that are true jump balls, and everything else stacked in between. That's the shape of the sport's biggest Saturday of the year before a single snap is played.
