How will the LA Rams respond after their Australian nightmare?

Viewers of the Rams' Week 1 loss to the 49ers in Melbourne could have been forgiven for thinking Los Angeles was asleep in front of 100,000 Aussies.

In many ways they were. The Super Bowl favorites were nothing more than super duds, and it's a nightmare the Rams still haven't woken up from.

But eleven days is a long time in football. Los Angeles is home, on its own turf, with the New York Giants in town for Monday Night Football and a lot of pride to repair.

What went wrong for the Rams in Melbourne?

Here's where the damage started. The Melbourne Cricket Ground, 100,021 people, and a 27-7 dismantling by the 49ers in the first NFL regular season game ever played in Australia. Seven points. Thirty-four minutes of possession for San Francisco. The preseason Super Bowl favorites turned up on the other side of the world and were embarrassed.

Then it got worse, because this wasn't just a game of football; it was a battle in sports science, and the Rams were cocky in their approach.

San Francisco flew in a week early, spent the days sightseeing and letting their body clocks catch up, and charmed half of Melbourne in doing so. Sean McVay's side landed roughly 28 hours before kickoff and got run out of the building. When you lose by 20 after a call like that, the critics are going to come for you; and that's exactly what has happened.

Making matters worse was the injury to Myles Garrett. The centerpiece of the entire offseason, the whole reason the defense was supposed to be terrifying, went for arthroscopic surgery and straight onto IR.

What's gone right since?

Aaron Donald is playing.

He said it himself after practice - "that's the plan" - and then McVay confirmed it Saturday. It will be the defensive end's first game since January 2024 and it comes at a time when the Rams need it most. The defense that Brock Purdy carved up for 379 yards and three touchdowns is not the defense the Giants are walking into with Donald part of it.

Is he going to be 2021 Donald? Almost certainly not. Nobody's pretending otherwise. But he doesn't need to be. He needs to be a man the Giants have to double, because the knock-on effect of that on a second-year quarterback in Jaxson Dart in a road environment is worth more than whatever Donald's own stat line ends up saying.

Will Puka Nacua play on Monday night?

Puka Nacua is questionable to suit up. A hip listing that McVay has described as groin soreness. He didn't practice Friday, didn't practice Saturday, and Sunday morning reporting had him trending the wrong way rather than the right one, although there was some mis-direction from some family members via Instagram on Sunday morning. Jordan Whittington, the next man up, is doubtful with a quad.

If both sit, the receiving room is Davante Adams', and Los Angeles would lean hard on the running game of Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.

The Giants secondary is arguably just as thin the Rams' receiver room, with Paulson Adebo on IR and Deonte Banks questionable with a calf. 

The market appears to be reacting to Puka being a potential non-starter while our model is factoring him in at the time of publishing. This creates opportunity with some various ways to play it on an exchange such as Kalshi.

The useful thing about a market that's already moved is that it's done most of its moving.

If Nacua is officially ruled out, this price doesn't fall far, because the fall already happened with the opening line of -7.5 coming down to -6.5. If he's active, the line snaps back toward 7 and the contract reprices hard in your favour, because the market has to adjust.

Small, likely downside. Larger, less likely upside. This is why trading on exchange has its avantages.

He's out, you're carrying half a position instead of a full one and you've got a decision rather than a problem.

Wait entirely. Clean, disciplined, and you might pay for it.. Zero exposure means zero exposure to the good outcome too, and if he's confirmed active you might lose the edge.
