Packers vs. Panthers Thursday Night Football preview

The Packers (4-3) come home to Lambeau Field after a 20-17 walk-off loss in Detroit ended their three-game win streak.

They now host a Panthers team (3-3) that still leads the NFC South despite being routed 43-13 by Tampa Bay last week, a game in which Bryce Young was sacked five times and threw two interceptions. Green Bay will look to improve on their league-low running game with Josh Jacobs back in the lineup for the second straight game against a Panthers defense that has struggled against the run.

The Dimers model gives the Packers a 64.2% chance to win and projects a 25-21 final.

That four-point margin is just enough to cover the -3.5 spread, and the 46 projected points lands just under the 46.5 total, aligning with the Packers’ 5-2 record to the Under this season and the close finishes in this series.

Eight of the last nine meetings were decided by single digits, including Carolina’s 16-13 walk-off win at Lambeau last November.

Our Packers vs. Panthers same game parlay picks

We're focused on the ground game in this one, with both teams ranking at the bottom of the league in rushing touchdowns allowed, and both teams coming off 100+ yard rushing performances by opposing RB1s.

As always, every leg is backed by our NFL player projections.

Leg 1: Josh Jacobs 60+ rushing yards

The data case: After being removed from the Commissioner's exempt list prior to Wek 7, Josh Jacobs slotted back into his role as lead back, with his 11 carries to MarShawn Lloyd's 6.

It wasn't a big rushing workload as the Packers eased him into action and went after the Lions' league-worst passing defense behind 45 pass attempts by Jordan Love, and he did most of his damage in the receiving game, with 5 catches for 55 yards.

Carolina has allowed the sixth-most rushing yards in the league, still inflated by the nearly 300 they gave up in Week 1, but then allowed 248 last week, with Bucky Irving (106), Kenny Gainwell (88) and Sean Tucker (52) dominating the ground game, and now are on a short turnaround without LB Jaelan Phillips.

We project Jacobs for 61.2 and the best game by a Packers RB yet this season.

Leg 2: Josh Jacobs anytime touchdown

The data case: Jacobs wasted little time scoring in his first game back for a team that previously had just 3 RB touchdowns entering Week 7.

Carolina has allowed 11 rushing touchdowns this year, tied for the most in the NFL, allowing teams to score at 76.5% of possessions in the Red Zone, the fifth-worst mark in the league, and gave up 3 on the ground last week to Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker.

At 53.5%, Josh Jacobs is our most likely touchdown scorer in this game.

Leg 3: Chuba Hubbard anytime touchdown

The data case: We don't expect it to be all Packers, and they haven't been particularly good against the run either.

On the Panthers' side of things, Chuba Hubbard is our second-most likely TD scorer in the game at 49.2%.

Green Bay has given up 9 rushing TDs this year, and Hubbard has scored 6 total touchdowns across his 6 games. He sees effectively every carry in this backfield with RB2 AJ Dillon never cracking 5 carries in a game, and Hubbard sees his fair share of targets too, with a pair of receiving scores on the season.

The Packers average 5.5 targets to opposing RBs, giving Hubbard a few paths to score, especially if Carolina gets into the red zone, where the Packers allow a score on 68.0% of opponent possessions and where all six of Hubbard's TDs have come from.
